I was born and brought up in Scotland. My first job was with the National Commercial Bank of Scotland. After several years with the bank and not getting anywhere, I moved to London in 1966. Isabel and I married in 1968 and settled in London. She had a job with the University College computer library and brought me some computer related books for my interest. These led me to my career in IT. I progressed within the IT area and eventually had the responsibility of managing 5 computer bureaux.
I set up a Consultancy company which was a great success and allowed me, as a Project Manager, too often work abroad. I found it fascinating working in other countries, namely USA, France, Italy, China, Germany, Mauritius and Sweden.
Eventually all the big 5 Consultancy companies started shedding staff, who then set up similar consultancy companies and business for my company was very difficult to find. I shut the company down and retired.
I have enjoyed several outside interests. I played golf, took up clay pigeon shooting and flying. Having obtained my pilot’s licence, I have flown aircraft within the UK, in Spain, USA and El Salvador.
Isabel and I moved to St Annes in 2007, I joined Rotary and in 2010 spent 2 weeks in India assisting in Polio immunisation.
In March 2013 I was diagnosed with oral cancer. This was a great shock to me. However, I contacted the Swallows and attended a meeting before my treatment. Issues associated with my surgery has left me unable to swallow anything and I am fed via a PEG. After release from hospital, I contacted the Swallows again and attended more meetings. The Swallows provided excellent support for me and eventually I became a Trustee.
