The IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) is a global initiative to improve the lives of over 590 million people worldwide living with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
The Swallows Head and Neck Cancer Charity, in association with IDDSI, have now launched ‘The Swallows Restaurant Card’ scheme to help people with swallowing difficulties to visit an approved eating establishment without worries or embarrassment.
A Flavourful Milestone – Restaurant Card Launch Night at Chinco’s!
We’re thrilled to share the highlights from the official launch of our Restaurant Card, which took place at the fantastic Chinco’s Mexican Restaurant in Poulton, Lancashire — the first venue to go live with the card!
Over 60 supporters, partners, and friends joined us for an evening filled with delicious food, inspiring conversations, and a shared commitment to supporting those affected by head and neck cancer. The atmosphere was electric, and Chinco’s was the perfect setting to kick off this exciting new initiative.
This launch marks the beginning of a nationwide campaign to bring more restaurants on board helping us raise awareness and vital funds, one meal at a time.
We’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to the incredible team at Chinco’s for being such fantastic hosts. Your support makes all the difference!

Our Vision
- To enable dysphagia sufferers to have the
opportunity to make visits to an eating establishment and to enjoy a meal with less difficulty or embarrassment - To enable those who experience dysphagia to
carry a card to highlight this to staff - To enable the restaurant, in turn, will do its utmost to ensure that a dysphagia friendly option can be served
- To promote, free of charge, participating restaurants at a national level (UK) and an international level
The Problem
Some dysphagia sufferers have problems swallowing certain
foods or liquids. Others can’t swallow at all.
Many need a softer and less dry diet. Some experience coughing or choking when eating or drinking. Most need extra water available to lubricate their mouth. The majority eat more slowly than others and have difficulty conversing whilst having a meal.
What Patients Say…
- I hope restaurants get involved to help me go out and have a lovely meal with my husband
- I don’t go out to eat any more but I would love to do so
- It would be fantastic to go out with my family again
- The changes to a meal that I need are slight – but it’s embarrassing to keep asking
- It will be nice not to have to explain to the staff that I have had cancer
- I am always the last to finish – I feel pressure when I haven’t finished but other people’s plates are being cleared
- I wish that I could order a smaller meal so that I feel less pressure
Challenges Faced by Patients with Swallowing Difficulties
- Meals listed on the menu may be difficult to manage without modification
- Meals may be too dry to eat
- Portions may be so large that they seem daunting
- Extra water to drink may not be easily available
- Certain vegetables may pose an increased choking risk
- Eating establishments may not allow necessary supplements to be brought in
