We are delighted to officially welcome the new Leicester Support Group to The Swallows community, along with our fantastic new group leads Paul, Sue and Craig.
The group has already been in existence for some time at Leicester Royal Infirmary, supporting local patients through regular monthly meetings. Earlier this year, we were approached by Laura Shields, CNS at the hospital, who reached out to explore how we could work together to strengthen and develop the group further.
Laura wrote:
“We hold a small monthly support group in Leicester for our patients however we often run out of ideas for the group and feel that it doesn’t always benefit the group as it should.
We recently attended the swallows conference and feel that we could combine our resources to improve the group and make it more accessible for more patients.”
Working closely with the hospital team, who helped identify group leads and secure a welcoming venue away from the hospital setting, plans were put in place to transition the existing hospital-based group into an official Swallows Support Group, becoming part of our wider shared community.
In April, Chris Curtis and I attended the group meeting to introduce ourselves and share more about The Swallows, with the first official Swallows taking place in May. Meetings are held monthly on the second Friday of each month, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Sue Young Cancer Support, Helen Webb House, 35 Westleigh Road, Leicester,LE3 0HHContact Information: Email: [email protected]
Since then, Paul, Sue and Craig have already made fantastic progress in raising awareness of The Swallows across the Leicester area. Posters are now appearing in hospitals and cancer centres, they have joined the WhatsApp Swallows community, are actively promoting the Dental campaign and already have a meeting arranged with their local MP.
It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and dedication from everyone involved, and we are incredibly excited to see the Leicester group continue to grow and support more people within the local community.
A huge thank you to Laura, the team at Leicester Royal Infirmary and of course Paul, Sue and Craig for all their hard work in helping make this happen. We look forward to supporting you on this journey and watching the group flourish
