Stage 4 Cancer Survivor
Ben was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in September 2017 after seeing the doctor for a persistent sore throat and cough and was originally only given 50% chance of survival.
At the start of treatment his cancer was identified in the left tonsil, throat, roof of mouth and lymph nodes.
Thereafter he went through the sadly all too familiar route of having a PEG fitted, operations, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy with all the challenges they bring.
When treatment ended in December 2017 Ben was left feeling mentally low, sore, no voice and with no energy, even using the stairs was a challenge on some days. Despite the challenges Ben’s drive, determination, and inherent desire to grab life “firmly by the balls” meant he won a new contract and returned to work in January 2018 and joined a local gym in the February.
Work and gym were briefly interrupted while Ben had a full left hip replacement in July 2018.
Fast forward to June 2020, Ben is a Personal Trainer at his local gym, and during the Covid19 lockdown qualified as a Boxing for Fitness Instructor and provided online training sessions to help keep people motivated, keep fit and learn new skills. He still works as a freelance Information Security Consultant supporting organisations to improve their Cyber Security.
Ben lives with his wife Sarah, whom he calls his rock, as without her he maintains he would be in the wrong side of that 50%. He has a mature son who is forging his own way in life.
“I first met Chris Curtis, Chairman of the Swallows at a local support group meeting, and was immediately impressed with his drive, charisma and passion. This meant when Chris asked me to be an advocate it was an opportunity I took with both hands. I am delighted to be part of such an amazing charity and work with amazing warriors and champions.” Ben
