John Holmes – Patron of The Swallows
“Vintage, Not Old!”
John Holmes, born in 1948, was diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer in 2009. His experience of diagnosis, treatment and life beyond head and neck cancer has given him a deep understanding of the challenges faced by patients and their families.
John became involved with The Swallows Head & Neck Cancer Support Charity in 2015 and has been an important part of the charity ever since.
From 2016 to 2019, John served as the Blackpool Patient & Caregiver Support Group Lead, using his own lived experience to support others going through their cancer journey.
Today, as a Patron of The Swallows, John continues to be very much hands-on. He helped with deliveries and collections for the charity shop and contributes his experience and knowledge to the development of patient and caregiver information, resources and support materials.
Away from The Swallows, John has been married to his wife Lynda since 1980, and family remains a hugely important part of his life.
And despite being born in 1948, John’s grandsons have made his status very clear:
“Grandad isn’t old he’s vintage!”
In John’s own words
“I’m very proud to be a Patron of The Swallows and to have the opportunity to share my lived experience with others. My message is simple: you can beat the Big C.”
John Holmes, Survivor, Patron and happily retired
John represents what The Swallows is all about: lived experience, friendship, practical support, hope and patients helping patients.
