I’m 57 years old, following a severe sore throat and earache for a period of 3 months, I was diagnosed with stage 2 Cancer of my vocal chords in July 2018, there then followed 30 sessions of radiotherapy. Prior too my diagnosis I was an 18 stone sales manager and my only exercise was getting in and out of a car – following my radiotherapy I decided to start exercising to help with my recovery. I then entered a local duathlon(run 3 miles; cycle 20 miles and run 3 miles) and a 10k race during which I started feeling breathless and started suffering from earache again – following another biopsy, it was discovered that the cancer was back and only option was a radical neck dissection and total laryngectomy.
Post surgery I began to run and cycle to get fit and assist with my recovery and three months after the operation I ran the Cardiff half marathon, followed by a 50k ultra 3 months later. Then came Covid and I started getting interested in bigger challenges 100k ultra and Duathlons, I then heard about the special snorkel provided by Clare at the The Royal Devon Hospital – then came my interest in becoming the first Laryngectomee to complete a triathlon (swim 400mtrs; cycle 12 miles; run 5km) and half Ironman(swim 1.2 miles; cycle 50 miles and run 13 miles), I have now competed in 7 triathlons and a half Ironman(although didn’t quite finish due to hypothermia) and continue to complete duathlons and various running events.
I firmly believe that a positive outlook, regular exercise and a good support network aids with recovery both physical and mental. Next year is my fifth year and am planning a large number of events designed to both test me and at the same time support the Swallows Charity.
